SKY CROSS - 1988

Made for Glenkirk Presbyterian Church, CA, along with Dove, Sky Cross resembles a slab of pastry from which a cookie has been cut. The 50-foot-tall wall appears to have had a cross-shaped piece removed. The wall protrudes from the body of the church as a screen rather than as a supporting structure. The cross-shaped aperture, which reaches from top to bottom of the cream-colored wall, frames the sky beyond.

  • In addition to running his own architectural company, Stewart Woodard was Director of Design for William Pereira & Associates for more than 45-years and may have worked with Van Sant on Pereira projects of the 1960s. [1]

Van Sant listed him as a reference in some later public art project applications and “put together the art team for the creation of the Orange County Peace Officer’s Memorial for architect Stewart Woodard,” and when the project hit difficulties, Woodard wrote to the artist in support of his work.
