Van Sant is celebrated for his innovative design of large-scale kites, with his airborne sculptures showcased in numerous museums across the United States and Europe. Pioneering the use of fiberglass tubes and nylon fabric in kite construction, he has earned the title of the Father of Modern Kite Making in the kite community.

"Jacob's Ladder," debuted in 1976 at the Institute of Contemporary Art in London, features 200 segments, can lift up to 2000 pounds, stretches a quarter of a mile, and allows individuals to climb into the sky.
