DOVE - 1988

Made for Glenkirk Presbyterian Church, CA, along with Sky Cross, Dove is a stained glass window. It depicts a simplified and stylized dove in shades of blue, green, white, and violet , with areas of bold red. The bird’s wings are outstretched and its breast is exposed.

The edges of the window aperture conform to the outline of the dove, which is set high in the church wall. The window’s angled interior edge creates a deep white frame on which gules of colored light play.

  • In addition to running his own architectural company, Stewart Woodard was Director of Design for William Pereira & Associates for more than 45-years and may have worked with Van Sant on Pereira projects of the 1960s. [1]

Van Sant listed him as a reference in some later public art project applications and “put together the art team for the creation of the Orange County Peace Officer’s Memorial for architect Stewart Woodard,” and when the project hit difficulties, Woodard wrote to the artist in support of his work.
