COMBAT ARTIST - 1969

As a result of Van Sant’s illustrations for Spartacus (1959), the Marine Corps Combat Art Program invited the artist to draw the Vietnam War. Although he initially declined, saying “I'm kind of sorry we're there,” some challenging life events later caused him to accept the offer and, in 1968, he embedded with the First Marine Division for three-months. [1]
