FULLERTON CITY SEAL - 1962

Van Sant designed the city seal and made the mosaic depicting the seal that is affixed to the front of the then-new Fullerton City Hall building. The circular seal is edged by black upper-case letters that spell out 'City of Fullerton' and 'California.' The central image contains four rectangles of varying sizes. They hold symbols that speak to the city’s values and history: a family group dressed in robes, an open book, and an orange tree with visible roots.

  • “Designed by artist Tom Van Sant, the figures shown in the seal are stylized depictions of the qualities important to the City of Fullerton. The orange tree refers to the City's agricultural beginnings; the man, woman and child represent families; and the open book represents the City's commitment to providing education and cultural opportunities to its citizens."
