  • The Hawaiian Dredging and Construction Co. poured the concrete for Van Sant’s Nineteenth Century Industries of Hawaii (1971)

According to sculptor Eugene Daub, Van Sant was "very good" at creating networks with developers involved in new construction, which meant that he was able to work directly with them rather than wait for an architect to recommend him for a project. this seems to have been especially true for his work on Hawaii. [1]

In 1976, Otto Piene created Pleiades at the University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy in Manoa, Honolulu. Otto Piene and Elizabeth Goldring were friends and colleagues of Van Sant through the 1980s. While Ms. Goldring does not recall when Otto and Tom first met, we might speculate that it happened in Hawai’i in 1976.
